How to Setup a VPN Connection over an MPLS Network?

Setting up a VPN connection over an MPLS network is becoming increasingly important for businesses that must securely connect multiple networks. With the help of MPLS, companies can configure site-to-site IPsec tunnels over their existing networks, allowing them to securely transmit data and access resources in remote locations. This article will discuss how to set up a VPN connection over an MPLS network and the various steps involved in configuring it.

The first step in configuring a VPN over an MPLS network is to create two networks: one for the remote site and one for the local area.

In the following illustration, we will assume that there are two remote locations, Remote Site A and Remote Site B, each with a network. For simplicity’s sake, we will only configure connections between these sites. The grids on each site would be different depending on what type of architecture they have in place. For example:

Remote Site A would have a LAN topology, whereas Remote Site B would have an OSPF-based IP subnet.

The following is a basic network design example of how to get VPNs up and running over MPLS networks. Remote Site A has an IP subnet, Remote Site B has an OSPF-based IP subnet, and the IPSs are connected to a Layer 3 MPLS network.

Step 1: Create remote site networks

On the remote site A, create a LAN 10.1.*.* (10.1.0.0/24) that is used for all devices on the remote site A side of the connection to your local office network (LAN). This will essentially be

a small LAN with a routable IP address, and you can use it to connect all the devices on your remote site A side of the VPN.Step 2: Create a site-to-site VPN networkThe next step is to create the tunnel between Remote Site A and Remote Site B. This will involve creating a Layer 3 MPLS network between these two remote sites with an interface for each of the remote site’s private subnets (10.1.0/24).
